Body Poem

Really all a body is for is jumping up and down in
front of relatives when they come over. You can do that
in front of them because they sort of have to be there
and put up with you, and watch what you do for them the best,
which is jump up and down like a fucking weirdo.

Jem Cohen's New Film: Museum Hours

Opens at IFC this Friday!

Museum Hours (Trailer) from Cinema Guild on Vimeo.

Liza Minnelli

People are getting ruined by the weather
in New York City. Did you read my report?
The amenities are insane. Broken by heat
into separate sections, each divided into
slices, like an orange is sliced, or the part
of that dude's hair on the F. But seriously, today
I feel like a slightly melted version of Liza Minnelli.
Let me show you how to belt one out.

Monday Dressing

Gasoline blouse with hemp glass
and tulip destruction. Partial inhalation
of highway dust due to mistake with
ignition. On the head, sloping mustard yellow
cotton bandana. There is enough milk for a week
in the fridge. Thinking of a cool place
and then just sitting in the heat.
A bag of frozen peas on my neck
with some foam wires for fanning
goose pimples. Throaty drag. Down
to the river I go with a high cadence.

Celebrity Dance Competition: Mood City. Colby, Todd J.

I keep thinking
it's 4th of July weekend
in Brooklyn today.
Lots of sleepy zooming around.
Lots of people caving into
the end of the week.
I live in Mood City.

How to Look Like Everything is Okay in Photographs

Is your house making
you feel large? Do the curtains
reveal a shimmery dust when
you pat them gently in the sunlight?
Is your kitchen a "no fuck zone?"
Does your bathroom smell of bleach
or the savory after-sprinkle of talc?
When you enter your house
are you greeted with the whoosh
of dander, or a plush degenerative
offal gush? Is your desk sprinkled
with broken hair and flexed pixels
or do you fix your bicycle in a
proper room? Do you enjoy gazing
out the window absentmindedly
only to discover someone is looking
back at you from the adjoining building?
When you ate your breakfast this morning
did you think of me?

Meat Packing

The room is lit by match heads
the size of pingpong balls. When struck,
the sulfur flares are immense and stunning.
I poke at the cognac-colored
wingtip bimorals and finger the blue
silk tie with a silent sense of awe.
Please, take note of the pea green
wall and wonder who had the time to do that.
Feel the cushions on the plush wingback
chair quiver under your ass. Listen, as lush birds deliver
remarkable songs in chirp patterns
that are both complex and soothing. The coffee
is mind blowing. Most of the people
walking by outside look like humans.
The angle of light across the table
doesn't even make me want to take a photo of it.
Air conditioners humming outside windows
sound ruthless and determined. Gradually
some doubts and worries seep into the room
like smoke being blown through a napkin.
In other news: Thursday.

Energy of the Future

If it is super chilly on the roof
then bring a light jacket, a cowboy salad,
some utensils like a ukulele, a CD player,
some crackers for teething, a small bottle
of water tucked into your sock, and a towel.
When it warms up, and it will, you can
always strip off the layers and sand some
of the rough spots down to the bone with
great care. Just kidding. I wouldn't want
you to take anything from my apartment.

People Gift

People are confusing to me. People clown around.
People climb onto luxury beds at Bloomingdales, I think.
There's a murky aspect to this dumpy morning,
full of lurid exhaustion and achy moping. Glitter
settles on my thumb over the glue. That's news.
Dawn has a mouth and it is whispering
something soothing, and miraculous, and menacing.
Ow! Down the stairs I go with a bunch of
intense pleasures in my head. I'll always hold
the present here, to the people gift, from
where I came, and shall return, fortunately.

Joanna Newsom - En Gallop

Very Very Bird

People should relax in the heat
they should go steady to release the heat
or let the rain gush over them
and lightning in them and grief
to provide a sense of relief. Light
must fill a space like meat under
skin, with bones supporting
the structure that allows us to move
or dance in such a way that implies
grace or value. There should be sunlight
too that pierces the skin just enough
to cause friction, thereby heating
the surface and the contents of our bodies:
liquid silk, sodium, and some pasta.
Get to know the difference between
warm and cold, dark and light.
If the day should go well then people
should think of birds as a source of amusement.
There are so many things people could
be doing right now. Eating birds is okay
too, for nourishment and feasts.

My Dream Everything

I miss you like Thousand Island Dressing,
like Swiss Miss Hot Chocolate. I miss you
like Bird's Eye Pudding, like Dream Whip,
like green apple Now-or-Laters, like fudge
in a sauce pan. I miss you like peppercorns
on pizza, like desert boots, like strawberry
shortcake from Piccadilly. I miss you like
bike ramps, toasted English muffins, like
chlorine, like Poochie, Corky, Joey, Alice,
Lewis, and Newt. I miss you like Badlands, I miss
you like Rubber Knife Fights, I miss you
like green plastic army men, I miss you like
a three-level tree fort, I miss you like
hiking in the desert of southern Arizona, I miss
you like running through a field in Vermont,
I miss you like eating strawberries off the
vine in the summer, I miss you like the first
glimpse of the ocean after a long winter,
I miss you like sketching on the F train,
I miss you like Peanut Butter Bomb from
Wild Ginger. I miss you like frosted Pop Tarts,
like yellow roses, like drawings for you
in the morning. I miss you like Paris, like
walking through Prospect Park, like finding
a turtle, like sharing popcorn in a movie, like
the smell of roses on your neck, like dancing,
like a slippery glimpse of a lizard on a wall,
like bats darting out of a beam of light, like
swimming in a lake, like cold feet against my
legs, like a morning kiss. I miss you like
just chilling out, like hanging out, like
drowsy movies in bed. I miss you like life,
my dream everything.

Curious Poem

This is one of the really curious situations
she got herself into. Then she said
so. She told us about her situation
as she took swigs of Kikkoman Soy Sauce.
It drained the water from her brain. She
was confused. She was doing some angry shop vacuuming
and busted her finger. She was angry at
the contractor or something about a leak
in the basement or some trouble she was
having at work. She didn't say. She had a metal
splint on her finger that picked up the radio
when she pressed it against her phone.
"I have met the new monster," she said.
Now all I have to do is listen to her
finger and I know what to wear tonight.

Joanna Newsom - Peach, Plum, Pear

I will always love this song.

Poem #1989

Some of us have cleared
a plot of land for strawberries.
We've dug the location like
a good song is dug. And the swirl
at the end of the day is actually
blood rushing away from the brain,
lifting your spirits enough
to lob a limb into lotion. Are you
with me? I'm starting to imagine
the great sea foam swelling
into the seawalls. Set us Free. In
the meantime, I will poke around in
your personal stuff and determine
whether or not I see any patterns
in your life that need editing.
I'll always be that good until I'm bad.

Milk of the Night

Different firing methods
affect the body and coloring.
Feeling kind of sleepy
and irritable? Try glancing
at a watch in an effort
to balance the freedom
of the fuzz. Want some super realism?
Try brain freeze over a Froze Fruit.
Extremely agitated? Point out that
the table with all your gifts
on it is in the wrong place. All-in-all
a return to some mystery,
gorgeous shoes, breathtaking
prices. Shake hands with a new
person, maintain a lack
of foresight, stumble forward,
again and again. Sun beating down,
golden light on the bricks.
Ask yourself: How will I feel
about this in 5 years?

June

Storms the size of grapefruits
speckle the landscape, bringing with them
a spastic havoc to the bossy bottoms.
Cut-off shorts bloom goose-pimpled legs
while heat makes the buildings all wavy
and ecstatic, like dancers in an erotic hut.
I would like nothing more than a cold glass
of blue nectar to clear my head and kink up
the works with a totally grand scheme
that actually plays out the way I envisioned it.
There are movies about days like today,
but I won't go there. I have dreams to go
before I sleep, and all that.
